A.—Doux comme le miel. P. métaph. Ce produit [le fric] mellifluent, sapide et polygène s'évapore avec la plus grande facilité (QUENEAU, Zazie, 1959, p. 201).
B. — Au fig. Qui est empreint de douceur (notamment en parlant d'une façon de s'exprimer). Gorgias, Carnéade (...) N'eurent pas chez les Grecs la bouche plus liante, La parole plus douce et plus mellifluente [que Villemain] (POMMIER, Crâneries, 1842, p. 82). La langue n'était plus le babil mellifluent (...) des Andalous, mais une langue dure, aigre, sifflante (MONTHERL., Pte Inf. Castille, 1929, p. 595).
Prononc.:[(l)] et [meli-], fém. [-]. Étymol. et Hist. 1. Ca 1485 «(liquide) doux comme le miel Myst. du V. Testament, éd. J. de Rothschild, 27464), emploi isolé; 2. 1488 [éd.] «(parole, etc.) doux, suave» (L'Aiguillon d'amour, f° 33 v° ds GDF.). Empr. au b. lat. mellifluens, att. seulement au fig. «(parole) douce comme le miel», comp. de mel «miel» et de fluere «couler, s'écouler».
